
Red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) and Yellow-footed tortoise (C. denticulatus)
Size: 30 cm (12 in) as adults, but can reach over 40 cm (16 in).
Description: With a black skin, and colorful red, yellow, and or white scales on their legs and faces, these are gentle, social tortoises that are popular in the pet trade. Their top shells carapaces are dark with yellow and red scutes (shell segments), and a yellow or lighter-colored plastron (underbelly).
Natural habitat: ranging from savannah to forest edges around the Amazon Basin (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Paraguay).
Diet: Omnivores.
