Our Mission

The Mid-Atlantic Turtle and Tortoise Society, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to promoting the responsible herpetoculture  of turtles and tortoises, promoting and supporting the study of chelonian natural history and conserving Mid-Atlantic chelonian species and habitat.

Our Organization

We are entirely volunteer driven, working towards protecting native turtles and their habitats and providing help when their habitats are disrupted.

While there are other respected herpetological organizations in the area, ours is the only one dedicated exclusively to turtles and tortoises. Most members are in the Baltimore-Washington DC-Northern VA area, but more than twenty states are now represented by MATTS members. We offer an adoptions program licensed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to find new homes for unwanted and/or un-releasable pet native turtles. The adoptions program is funded strictly by donation without grants or reimbursements from Maryland DNR or other government sources.
