It is generally legal to keep most native and exotic turtles with an Exotic and Nongame Individual Hobby Permit from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The exceptions are the endangered bog turtle and all sea turtles, which cannot be possessed. It is illegal to take any native turtle from the wild to keep as a pet. Additionally, there are specific regulations on selling and transporting turtles, and it is illegal to release any non-native turtle into the wild
